Towards Heat Tolerant Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.) by Utilizing Plant Genetic Resources

چکیده

Climate change and its extreme heat waves affect agricultural productivity worldwide. In the cultivation of beans, stress during reproductive phase may lead to complete crop failures, as recently was documented for runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.) in Austria. Developing better adapted varieties utilizing plant genetic resources is utmost importance such conditions. Our study aimed at identifying tolerant accessions developing associated markers their application marker assisted selection. For this, we assessed phenotypic characteristics 113 genotypes (101 Austrian origin) grown glasshouse under conditions two years. particular three showed a higher yield than reference variety Bonela both The data complemented with based on 1190 SNPs revealed high performing pure that serve good candidates be included breeding programs. addition, genome-wide association analysis resulted 18 quality were subsequently used calculation an estimated tolerance using MassARRAY® system. Overall, our represents first steps towards withstand global warming.

Domestication Genomics of the Open-Pollinated Scarlet Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.)

The runner bean is a legume species from Mesoamerica closely related to common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). It is a perennial species, but it is usually cultivated in small-scale agriculture as an annual crop for its dry seeds and edible immature pods. Unlike the common bean, P. coccineus has received little attention from a genetic standpoint. In this work we aim to (1) provide information about...

Biochemical Evaluation of Fermented White Maize (Zea Mays L.) Blended with Scarlet Runner Bean (Phaseolus Coccineus L.) Flour

Fermented maize product, ogi, is a popular weaning and breakfast cereal in west coasts of Africa. In the study proximate, mineral and amino acid compositions of ogi from a composite mixture of white maize (Zea mays L.) and scarlet runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.) flours were evaluated using standard processing techniques. Maize ogi was substituted with scarlet runner bean flour at ratios of...

Transcriptome Analysis of Salt Tolerant Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under Saline Conditions

Salinity is one of the important abiotic stress factors that limit crop production. Common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., a major protein source in developing countries, is highly affected by soil salinity and the information on genes that play a role in salt tolerance is scarce. We aimed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and related pathways by comprehensive analysis of transcrip...

European Phaseolus coccineus L. landraces: Population Structure and Adaptation, as Revealed by cpSSRs and Phenotypic Analyses

Relatively few studies have extensively analysed the genetic diversity of the runner bean through molecular markers. Here, we used six chloroplast microsatellites (cpSSRs) to investigate the cytoplasmic diversity of 331 European domesticated accessions of the scarlet runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus L.), including the botanical varieties albiflorus, bicolor and coccineus, and a sample of 49 dom...
